Vanlife in Morocco: come prepared. Tips, tricks and our experience
New country, new chapter, new adventures. ❤️ We wanted to come prepared to Morocco, but if you’re a traveler you will know: every country comes with its own manual.
During our last week in Spain we have been SO excited to go to Morocco. We wanted to do stuff right, so we took the time (and money😭) to buy a new battery and install it (our old one couldn’t handle the fridge) and we put a new water tap in our kitchen (the old one kept leaking).
We did one last crazy shopping in Mercadona in Tarifa, because we wanted to bring all the stuff we’d fallen in love with. Pro tip: bring your own alcohol from Spain, in Morocco it’s more expensive and way harder to get. Only in big international malls it’s allowed to sell alcohol in Morocco (Carrefour in Agadir has it, if you’re on the search ;).
Ferry, customs, parking & money in Morocco
We took the ferry from Tarifa to Tanger and after handing our (broken) drone to Customs (Morocco does not like drones for some reason) they opened the gate for us and we were IN! 🥳 It all feels a bit scary and official, but the people are very friendly and welcoming.
It’s so weird that you can enter a different world with just a 35 minutes ferry ride. We didn’t know the way and of course we accidentally drove straight through the medina in Tanger. Men in long robes, donkeys on the street, colours everywhere, spices, pots and pans… You name it.
We were glad to find a parking spot where we could sleep for the night! Just pay the men in yellow vests some 20-40 Dirhams (or 2-4 euros if you’re like us and didn’t find an ATM yet). Tip: you can download areas in Google Maps so you can use it offline, same as with the (paid) Park4Night app. Recommended!
New country, old problems
All our old problems we found a way to deal with in Spain, popped right back up when in Morocco. Where to park, what’s good Wifi, where to work and where to empty & fill, but that’s just part of vanlife forever probably. Every country has it’s own manual and when you think you figured it all out, it’s already time to cross a border and do it all over again. 😉
For now we are just learning the ways of Morocco and adapting to it.😅
