We decided to quit our jobs, buy a van and to travel the world. We are just normal folks, no big budgets or crazy goals, just two people who decided they wanted to live life differently. Here’s how it started.
HOW IT ALL STARTED
When I (Eline) was around 13 years old, I got asked by my friends where on the map I wanted to live. I pointed at an island as furthest away from the Netherlands as possible. Later that little island turned out to be New Zealand.
Jonathan was hooked on Discovery Channel as long as he can remember. He has always been adventurous and he can’t leave a tree unclimbed.
After we met and got in a relationship, it soon became clear that we both love travelling. Our first expensive thing we bought together? A 5x5m Sahara Bell Tent.
WHAT’S NEXT?!
We got married, we got jobs and lived in a rental. Automatically we got into the pattern of wanting to buy a house and settle, but we wondered if it would be worth it. The house market in The Netherlands is crazy, so spending a fortune on a house and then only really LIVE in the weekends, seemed a bit contradictory to us… We wanted our whole week to be lived and be of meaning.
Despite being in a society where career and status defines you, our dream of living differently didn’t go away. We kept thinking: ‘as soon as we have fun jobs that pay enough to buy a house with a garden and a dog, then WHAT’S NEXT?!’
All the things we came up with felt like just killing time, instead of living life. And we know we are not alone in this thought. So this journey we’re on, is also a search for why people (mostly of our generation) feel this way.
Why are there so many vanlifers and what gives fulfillment to their lives? To our lives? And why do so many people just follow the system and live the rat race? Will they ever make time to spend and enjoy the money they have earned… Or isn’t that the goal anymore?
THE GOAL
We want to inspire people to live intentionally. No matter what floats your boat, as long as you’re happy with the course you’ve set and you still have your destination in mind: you go! But if you’ve wandered off or you have no idea where you’re going and you are not happy with where you are: tag along!
We don’t have a miracle answer to what the purpose of life is, but we can inspire each other to CHOOSE. To choose want you want and what you don’t want, to choose for small things that make you happy, to choose for the life you want to live on a daily basis.
We chose for vanlife, what’s your choice?
Let’s go First Gear!
