How to start vanlife?
A rough start in vanlife is almost guaranteed, but -with some help- we got the hang of it.
The first three weeks of our journey didn’t feel vanlife-y; we couldn’t find spots to stay for more than one day; we went to McDonalds three times a week (we didn’t dare use our Porta Potti), but most of all: we hadn’t met any people yet.❤️🩹
Here, in Peñíscola (see photo), we met Mill and her dog Maus. Mill told us about how to find good parking spots, about not caring too much about all the rules and just living life a bit more relaxed. We really needed to hear that!
Mill was also the one who recommended not only to us, but also to Andy and his dog Maya, the beautiful location Toll Blau. So when we met Andy there again, the world couldn’t seem smaller. 😂

We discovered that Andy was heading in the same direction as we were, namely the south of Spain. We asked (given courage by all the stories of Mill) if Andy wanted to team up with us, and he did! It was so much easier with two campervans to find spots that felt safe (safety in numbers), we could do all our groceries together and it was just great fun to discover all the places together. Even decision-making was easier, because Andy already had some experience. We traveled together for more than 3 weeks!
Mill already said so: in vanlife everything lands on it’s feet. 😉
Jonathan and I started this adventure because it felt like something we couldn’t do without, but we are very interested in why others would want to live in a small van. What we’ve loosely learned from Mill & Andy (and our own experiences so far) :
Vanlife is about freedom, going places, gazing at the stars, being somewhere new every time again, meeting people, learning from other people, swimming in the sea, having bonfires and enjoying nature.
And maybe most of all: trusting the process.
